Yeah, it's cold here; No, I didn't vote for Blago.

This week, Forbes named Chicago #3 on its Most Miserable Cities List. The Windy City, Chitown, Metropolis in the Land of Lincoln, or Obamaland (take your pick) fell short of Stockton, California and Memphis, Tennessee. According to Kurt Badenhausen, Chicago is even more miserable than Flint, Michigan. Has Kurt visited Flint recently? Not surprisingly, everyone is talking about it.

Of course, Kurt and Forbes are schilling—like so many journalists and struggling media enterprises--coming up with arbitrary lists (Remember the 25 most influential liberals in media? Wasn’t that in Forbes just last week?), hoping to stir up reaction from readers, scrounge together some online page views for measly ad dollars, and pretend that money mag Forbes is above everybody else’s miserable money problems. Oh yeah, Chicago has such a high employment rate. Nevermind the fact that Forbes just consolidated all its departments into one and rumors of layoffs have been swirling about its news desks for months.

So, Kurt, what makes Chicago so terrible?
"Lousy weather, long commutes, rising unemployment and the highest sales tax rate in the country are to blame for the Windy City being near the top of our list. High rates of corruption by public officials didn't help either."

Yes, and the subway smells in New York, there’s smog in L.A., frozen corpses lie scattered in Detroit, Disney laid people off in Orlando, and former President George W. Bush has returned to Crawford, Texas, so let’s throw all those spots on the list too!

Kurt doesn’t bother addressing the flippantly-mentioned commute issue (Yeah, the CTA isn’t the MTA, but it’s not like Chicagoans are taking rickshaws to work.), doesn’t bother pointing out that rising unemployment seems to be a trend outside the Chicagoland area, and makes a weak barb at the weather we had here in January (Seventeen below, har har har!). Instead, he focuses most of his argument against Chicago on our sales tax and corrupt politicians. While they’re legitimate arguments, I don’t think an inflated sales tax and a few crappy governors (Sarah Palin, anyone? Did Wasilla make the list too?) warrant tacking a big fat #3 on Chicago.

But go ahead, Kurt Badenhausen and Forbes Magazine, call us whatever you want. You were bound to leechily suck some measly page views out of your Miserable City Song and Dance Routine (Did I mention they made a slideshow out of the article too? Be sure to click through every single picture of every single city!), so congratulations on all your success. For Chicago, it may be a welcome blow since all that sing-song praise we got last fall, fueled by our continued nomination for the 2016 Summer Olympics and Barack Obama’s golden November. Even another magazine, FastCompany, named Chicago 2008’s City of the Year with a beautiful article penned by my former teacher Alex Kotlowitz. Alex wrote a bit more than a list to pay homage to the soul that is this city—something that Forbes and Kurt might want to consider.

But let’s stick instead with this #3 Most Miserable rating. That’s right, America. Chicago is the pits. We’re worse than Detroit, than Cleveland, and probably than your town too. We’re terrible. Stay away. Don’t move here, and should you have to visit, keep it short. Us Chicagoans will suffer our sales tax, our governors, our bone-chilling winters and soul-lifting summers, our fattening foods and expansive lakefront, our arts scene and music world, our diverse neighborhoods and beautiful architecture, our industrial proud past and our incredible innovative future alone. We’ll bear that burden just fine, and if Forbes can help us continue to weed out the New York lackeys like Kurt who should stay away and keep the general city population down, we’ll appreciate the help.

I don't know if you heard...

...but it's cold here in Chicago. Like, really, really cold. Like, it's all that we're all thinking about cause it's so cold.

How cold, you ask? Well, let's say that for the last twelve hours, it's been below zero without the windchill. The high today is -1 and as of 12:30 PM, it's -5 but feels like -23. Fun!

On the walk to work today (I haven't attempted to move my car from the ice-snow igloo that has formed around it in the last week after we got 15 inches of snow or whatever it is), my eyes kept sticking shut because of the tears forming from the wind and blinking. I may have lost a few eyelashes, but that's only a small casualty.

I know I can't whine too much because there are people who live in places like International Falls and Bismarck. (By the way, why do you people do that? How can you stand it?) They've got it a lot tougher than--

Screw it. I'm going to complain all I want.

(Amazing photo courtesy of the Chicago Tribune, whose current homepage has a ticking clock of how long it's been below zero and a screaming headline: Why DO you live here, anyway?)

Surprise! It's More Gross Chicago Weather

I'm always quick to defend Chicago when people (usually New Yorkers) give it a hard time. But it's hard to defend a city when its weather sucks so hard. Take, for example, the satellite image of our current weather. Notice the big blotch of gross that centers over the ever Windy City and that other big blotch that just recently passed through. Tornado watch for only another hour, Chicago! Woo!

Chicago is literally crumbling beneath me

Thanks to the god-awful freezing Chicago weather, there’s excitement down the block from my office.

A water main explosion on Montrose late last night has the street in dirty shambles today. Apparently water reached the four foot mark at some points on the street (probably under the Metra tracks). I haven’t been by yet to see the chaos, but CNN has a video of the craziness and various Flickrites have images, like this one.

Nostalgia

I miss New York.

I'll be sitting at my computer (like on a day like today) and suddenly start thinking about walking down 7th Avenue in Park Slope and the sound and smell of crisp leaves crackling and crushing under feet and strollers. Or I'll think about what various dirty words the street vendors at the Court Street stop in Brooklyn would toss in my direction as I rushed off to class. Or I'll suddenly think of the view of the dirty canal from the F line as it slips around Red Hook. Or I can taste the chocolate shakes from the Shake Shack and hear the music in Madison Square. When the sun blinds me in Chicago, I think about the glinting light bouncing off the flying towers of New York. I can't help it.

I haven't gotten into the city (here, in Chicago) nearly as much as I'd promised I would. I really have no good excuse either other than how much I hate the El after riding the MTA subway. I am, however, going into the city on Saturday for an animation festival at the Music Box. Had it not been -30 degrees below last weekend, I was going to go bar-hopping. There's still time and plenty of city.

For now, I apply and search for jobs and torture myself by wondering where I'll be in a year. Which is why I must stop thinking and wondering and drowning in what-if's. For now, there is now.

I live in Evanston. And that's fine.

(it'd be nicer if I had my iPod...)

12 Hours from Hell

TWELVE HOURS FROM HELL

otherwise known as midnight 1/30 to noon 1/30

MIDNIGHT-3 am: Study session/bonding session in Heather's room with her, Jason, and various other people who joined the party

3 am-3:30 am: Failed attempts to sleep (Meanwhile, one bed over, Jess doesn't sleep but an hour the entire night)

3:30-approximately 6 am: Sleep! Yay! Ignorance is bliss!

Approximately 6 am: FIRE ALARM FROM HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IT'S 6:30 AM.

THE WIND CHILL IS -20 BELOW ZERO.

THERE IS FIRE ALARM, DURING WHICH I PARTAKE IN AN IMPROV STUDY SESSION CONCERNING ANSELM'S PROOF OF GOD'S EXISTENCE.

I AM NORTHWESTERN.

Post-Demonic Fire Alarm-7:15 am: Failed attempts to sleep

10 am: Sleep through discussion group

11:00 am-Noon: History of Philosophy midterm=no fun at all

Then my day picked up... Meaning, I watched television, read Newsweek, cuddled with Anna, and slept for the rest of the afternoon until...

5:30-5:45 pm: Pregame for SAGA with some raspberry vodka shots. Sad, true, tons of fun.

5:45-6:30 pm: SAGA drunkeness

lost time... until 8:00 pm: GYPSY

Finally a late evening concluded with more raspberry vodka, music, sobering up during a long convo with Anna, a dance party to Toxic on repeat, and Fantasia 2000 in John and Brett's room.

I have been productive today, eating at Panera and practicing my horn self for over an hour. Uncle Steve can eat it since he sent me bogus attachment that doesn't tell me shit about my research project... And he's not at home to tell me what the attachment said. Gr...

But now I am off to see Lucia at the Lyric Opera House. Oh man... Gotta get my culturin' in.

Exclamation points serve to amplify and emphasize

Today rocked my world for many reasons. I had two classes and was done by noon. I like this better than my Fridays off schedule because it's more rewarding!! :D I totally ate lunch with Brett and John and then hung around doing superfun things like PAYING BILLS! WOOOOOOO! Yay for getting things done.

Tonight, Jess and I were like... Sheeit. What are we gonna do?
We thought, Whoa, there is so nothing to do.
But we were so wrong!

!!!We ventured out into Evanston for some good chocolate fun at the chocolaterrie. I don't know if that's what you call it, but we will.

!!!Then Tate met up with us, we ran into voice majors Meghan and Dennis.

!!!Then we had a winin' dinin' good time in NMQ in Dennis' room before beginning the hunt for: a-million-people-cc-didn't-know.

!!!Then, the million people CC didn't know, plus her usuals, all went to Las Palmos. Wow. The whole losing your voice and regaining it thing doesn't always work well when you're laughing really hard. I've never heard anyone refer to effects of drinking as making their penis feel tingly, but that comment has totally changed my perception of drunkeness.

!!!Then it snowed, a lot! And Tate pushed me in the snow! What is it with me getting pushed in the snow, man?

!!!Then we totally hung out at Jones and I watched/semi-had-to-participate-in a game of Spin the Bottle. It was so close to pornography, I can't even explain. When it comes to spin-the-bottle kissing, Meghan pulled the fastest move on me ever. Whoa!

!!!Then Jess and I headed back to the dorm with another kid CC didn't know, but met! Alright!

!!!Then Jess, John and I bundled up and went out into the snow. We played in the hilly valleys outside Jones and went to the beach. I wrote my name really big. John wrote his nickname "Smells" right by mine! Aww! I love snow so much! (did I mention that it is cashmere?) We totally saw the Titanic sink in Lake Michigan too!

Tonight has created some conclusions for me...
1. I shouldn't judge people too quickly.
2. Some people will be hoes and others are future pornographic camera-men.
3. Spin the Bottle can desolve into drunken orgies.
4. John can be a lifeguard and save "Jskah"'s life whenever.
5. Whips aren't meant to be cracked in hallways.
